Info about a new play at London's New End Theatre - 9th to 19th March, 2011

74 Georgia Avenue

74 Georgia Avenue, a one-act play by Tony and Academy Award nominated writer Murray Schisgal is to have its UK premiere at the New End Theatre, Hampstead in March and will be directed by Paul Blinkhorn.

When his marriage falters, Marty returns to the once Jewish Brooklyn of his youth and the apartment where he was born. There, in what is now a black neighbourhood, he meets the current tenant Joseph, whose father was the janitor of the once thriving synagogue which Marty attended as a child. Together they find solace in recalling the long-dead figures of the past.

Murray Schisgal had his first Broadway success with Luv, which premiered in 1964 and earned a Tony Award for director Mike Nichols. He co-wrote the screenplay for Tootsie, which starred Dustin Hoffman and received numerous awards including a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture.

The production features Daniel Dresner, a graduate of the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, who appeared in Working Title’s feature film Sixty-Six, as Marty, and Nathan Clough who appeared in The Shawshank Redemption at the Wyndhams Theatre, as Joseph.

Director Paul Blinkhorn is a graduate of the MA Theatre Directing programme at East 15 and was a recipient of the highly coveted AHRC award. He most recently directed Siren, a new play by Peter Briffa at the Etcetera in August 2010, and his award-winning short film Duty Calls has been shown internationally in Canada, France, Germany and Romania.
