Deserts and tropical forests are both alien terrain to the British, though parts of the countryÃ¢Â€Â™s army have had to get used to them. Willis Hall used the forest for his 1958 play The Long and the Short and the Tall as a group of soldiers from various parts of Britain, officers and men, are holed up with a Japanese prisoner in 1942 Malaya.
