Deserts and tropical forests are both alien terrain to the British, though parts of the country’s army have had to get used to them. Willis Hall used the forest for his 1958 play The Long and the Short and the Tall as a group of soldiers from various parts of Britain, officers and men, are holed up with a Japanese prisoner in 1942 Malaya.
